Fourth Pig Green & Natural Construction is hiring! We are looking for a number of people to fill jobs in our growing company. We are hiring for the following positions:

  • General Skilled Labourer
  • Carpenter
  • Working Site Supervisor
  • Project Coordinator
  • Site Superintendent
  • Project Manager Residential Construction.  

Detailed descriptions of the positions are listed below. Successful candidates for all of these positions are keenly interested in environmentally, natural, sustainable and energy efficient building techniques.

Our mission is to foster ecologically balanced methods of construction and energy production in order to promote more sustainable and healthy communities. The Fourth Pig consults on, renovates and builds low-carbon, energy efficient buildings. We work primarily in the GTA, the Golden Horseshoe and Muskoka areas.These positions are focused in the GTA but please let us know if you have interest in future positions in Muskoka.

Skilled Labourer

Wage range: $18-24/hour


Responsibilities:

The skilled labourer reports to the lead carpenter or working site supervisor as assigned.  The skilled labourer will assist in maintaining a safe and efficient job site and take on tasks as needed.

Skills/Requirements:

  • Have minimum 1 to 2 years construction site experience
  • Some basic tools an asset
  • Actively working towards improving skill level
  • Experience in renovations and additions
  • Experience, knowledge of or at least keen interest in environmentally and energy efficient building techniques
  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • Fall protection WHMIS and first aid training.  Additional related training an asset
  • Ability to arrive reliably on time to job sites in the GTA and transport tools as required

Physical ability requirements:

  • Work an 8 hour day of physical labour
  • Work inside and outside throughout the year
  • Ability to lift 50lb over a sustained period of time
  • Ability to safely carry out a full slate of physical demands throughout a work day of construction such as climbing ladders and scaffold, reaching and lifting overhead, shoveling


Carpenter

Wage range: $25-35/hour

Responsibilities:

The carpenter position focuses on performing a range of carpentry and construction related tasks.  The carpenter may also lead apprentice carpenters in tasks. The carpenter will assist in maintaining a safe and efficient job site and take on tasks as needed. Work includes building foundations, installing floor beams, laying sub-flooring and installing walls and roofing systems;
fitting and installing trim, doors, stairs, moulding and hardware; measuring, cutting and joining materials made of wood or wood substitutes, metal, straw and other building materials;  repairing and renovating wooden and other structures; erect scaffolding, site cleaning. Finish carpentry, framing and other construction skills related to renovations, additions and new builds

Skills/Requirements:
 

  • Have 10+  years construction site experience, with strong skills in framing, finish carpentry, and experience in renovations and additions
  • Knowledge of and experience in green and natural  building techniques and products an asset
  • Experience and knowledge of Passive House techniques is an asset
  • Comfortable reading and interpreting floor plans and blueprints
  • Strong ability to do take offs and order materials
  • Knowledge of the current Ontario Building Code as it applies to residential low-rise and light-commercial construction 
  • Fall protection, WHMIS and first aid training.  Additional related training an asset
  • Own a full compliment of tools
  • Posses a valid Class G driver’s license with insurance
  • Posses a reliable vehicle, (possession of a vehicle capable of moving large materials, such as lumber)

Working Site Supervisor

Wage range: $28-35/hour

Responsibilities: 

  • Manage the day-to-day site operations for construction projects
  • Coordinate, manage and schedule sub trades and company labourers
  • Finish carpentry, framing and other construction skills related to renovations, additions and new builds
  • Report daily project progress to Project manager
  • Other duties as required


Skills/Requirements:
 

  • Have 5+ years’ experience as a construction site supervisor
  • Have 10+  years construction site experience, with strong skills in framing, finish carpentry, and experience in renovations and additions, experience in natural building, and passive house an asset
  • Comfortable reading and interpreting floor plans and blueprints
  • Strong ability to manage budgets, schedules and subtrades
  • Knowledge of the current Ontario Building Code as it applies to residential low-rise and light-commercial construction
  • Strong verbal communication skills, additional languages an asset
  • Highly organized
  • Fall protection, WHMIS and first aid training.  Additional related training an asset
  • Own a full compliment of tools
  • Posses a valid Class G driver’s license with insurance

Project Coordinator

Wage range: $32-38/hour

Responsibilities: 

The Project Coordinator (PC) will run, administer and organise all project activities in cooperation with and under the direction of the Construction Project Manager. 

  • Coordinate activities, resources, equipment and information
  • Liaise with clients to identify and define project requirements, scope and objectives
  • Make certain that clients’ needs are met as the project evolves
  • Help prepare project proposals, timeframes, schedule and budget
  • Monitor and track project’s progress and handle any issues that arise
  • Act as the point of contact and communicate project status adequately to all participants
  • Use project management tools to monitor working hours, budget, plans and money spend
  • Issue all appropriate legal paperwork
  • Report and escalate to management as needed
  • Create and maintain comprehensive project documentation, plans and reports

Skills/Requirements

  • 1-3 years of experience in project coordination / management in a related field
  • Previous experience in cooperating with Project Managers for the successful delivery of projects
  • Knowledge of the current Ontario Building Code as it applies to residential low-rise and light-commercial construction
  • Excellent client-facing and internal communication skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Solid organizational skills including attention to detail and multitasking skills
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office and of project management software such as BuilderTrend
  • Formal training in a related field would be considered an asset
  • PMP certification would be considered an asset
  • WHMIS, Working at Heights, First Aid & other certs. considered an asset


Site Superintendent / Manager

Wage range: $35-42/hour

The  candidate will be responsible for overseeing all trades and effectively managing daily on site activities. The successful candidate must  possess the  knowledge, experience and  confidence to engage and professionally interact with the design professional's, consultants and client while successfully directing the sub-­contractors and other construction related personnel in planning, coordinating and  safely executing the work in accordance with the  contract documents, schedule and budget. This individual will work  closely with the Project Manager and fulfill an integral role on the  project. Candidate must be  professional and a  personable leader  committed to the overall  objective and  self development within the  company.      

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the  preparation of  the project schedule  
  • Review the project plans and specifications and comment on  the  building  design,  scheduling, possible cost savings measures and potential construction problems  
  • Review and accept the general conditions budget
  • Assemble the job site office and equipment requirements
  • Have  confidence in own ability to intelligently communicate with design team/client as well as  effectively lead  the trades
  • Contact, schedule  and coordinate all subcontractors, suppliers and utilities
  • Monitor and maintain the project construction schedule on a weekly basis
  • Raise and discuss relevant issues at the job site meetings
  • Inform the Project Manager of any errors, discrepancies or omissions contained within the  Consultant’s  design  drawings
  • Maintain a safe job site and ensure that the requirements of the Occupational Health and  Safety Act are enforced  
  • Coordinate and direct independent testing and inspections as  required
  • Maintain and enforce good construction standards and quality control
  • Maintain control and responsibility for the security and operation of directly owned equipment  on the job site
  • Control and monitor labour,  material and equipment expenses. Assist in the  preparation of  the  monthly cost  forecasting summaries
  • Ensure that “as-built”  drawings  are  prepared  on  an  ongoing  basis  by  all  trades  during  the  construction period  
  • Coordinate all required  municipal  inspections
  • Prepare and expedite project deficiency lists
  • Maintain a  eat and tidy  site     

Skills/Requirements:

  • Knowledge of common computer software including Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Excellent organizational,  presentation, and interpersonal  skills

Project Manager, Residential Construction

Wage range: $35-42/hour

Responsibilities: 

The Project Manager, residential construction(PM) will be responsible for the overall construction of projects assigned. The PM will promote and maintain a safe and efficient job site and take on tasks as needed. The  Construction Project Manager will work with design professionals, consultants and clients  as well as Site Supervisors, and other construction related personnel in planning, coordinating and safely executing the work in accordance with the contract documents, schedule and budget. The PM will perform or fulfill such duties and responsibilities as the Employer may designate from time to time and as are reasonably consistent with the position.

 

  • Preparation of the project schedule
  • Review the project plans and specifications and comment on the building design, scheduling, possible cost savings measures and potential construction problems
  • Assist the construction manager / estimator in preparation of project budget
  • Assist in assembling the job site equipment requirements
  • Have confidence in own ability to intelligently communicate with design team/client as well as effectively lead the trades
  • Expedite all shop drawings and approvals
  • Monitor and maintain the project construction schedule on a regular basis
  • Raise and discuss relevant issues at the job site meetings. Prepare & issue minutes of all site meetings
  • Inform the Consultant/Client of any errors, discrepancies or omissions contained within the Consultant’s design drawings
  • Expedite all CO (change order) costs. Maintain current CO logs
  • Monitor site safety and ensure that the requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act are enforced
  • Ensure completion of and track all independent testing and inspections as required
  • Issue monthly progress draws and invoicing to consultant and client including final holdbacks (if needed) 
  • Maintain and enforce good construction standards and quality control
  • control and monitor labour, material and equipment expenses   
  • Ensure that “as-­‐built” drawings are prepared on an ongoing basis by all trades during the construction period and issue final close outs to consultants, owner and city accordingly
  • Ensure all required municipal inspections are performed
  • Prepare and expedite project deficiency lists
  • Prepare and organize a project directory for hand over to the client at the end of the project

Skills/Requirements:

  • 2+  years  experience  as  a  Project Manager  on residential  custom builds and renovations.  
  • 10+ years working in residential construction in supervisory or management positions.
  • Formal training in  a  construction  related  field  an  asset
