The importance of blower tests

Air leaks suck. They suck out heat. They suck out cold air. They suck out money. So, when you are building or retrofitting to create an energy efficient structure you have to test for air leaks. This is often done with a blower door test. Below is a photo from a recent blower door test we did on our Toronto project (where we are working towards a very efficient building).

Blower doors test a home's airtightness. "Blower doors consist of a frame and flexible panel that fit in a doorway, a variable-speed fan, a pressure gauge to measure the pressure differences inside and outside the home, and an airflow manometer and hoses for measuring airflow." [energy.gov].  Not only do they work really well, they produce good photos.
